the ideas which she felt to. be Communiatie in nature were

_ In addition to the above, Mes. MILLER stated that |
geveral years ago, approximtely late 1953, through her
-agscetation with MARY ARNOLD, she worked at the Ameriean
(“© Pybladelphia, During her period of employment at the AFSC
} office, she heard allegations made by several of her friends
‘her employment she knew that the ARSC meintained files on
\ various individuals, and upon gearching through these files
- ghe vemoved the HISS file and took it to her home where she
and one of her friends read it. She could resall nothing __
, yg specific from this file other than the fact that the AFSC
oo did actively engage in. elther soliciting or collecting funde
_. to be used in HISS' defense. As she recalled, the file con~
\. tained numerous names and amounts which various individuals
nad eontributed for the HI8S.defagse, She also sald that —
this file contained a letter whieh she believed was addressed
ss $o the parole board guaranteeing & position for HISS if he ~
should be released. Following this incident, she went to — .
A the Director of the AFSC (whose name she could sot recall)
and questioned him concerning ALGER HISS and the AFSC con- | —
neetion with the HISS case, Shortly thereafter she was
bf the interest she expressed in the HISS case.
mS Upon completion of the interview, Mrs, MILIZR was
geein advised that neither the WILPF nor the AFSC as orgéni-
gations were under investigation by the FBI and nothing
should be implied to that effect; however, the Bureazu is

-eoncerning these various "Communistic” ideas but ¢ould reeall —~
Friends Service Committee. (AFSC) office, 20 South 12th Street,
| that the APSC had supported ALGER HISS in his trial, Through
"0. she located a file for ALQER HISS. Being of a cusious nature ©
peleased from her employment, and she believes it was because —
poterested in Communist infiltration into these organizations.
