LISHANSKY was interviewed on 11/27/53, and the receipt of his
letter dated 11/1/53, was orelly acknowledged,
He advised that he directed this letter to Mr. HOOVER more.
or less as a sense of duty to his brother RELPH, a member of the United States
Air Force, who is fighting against Communism, He honed thet Mr. HOOV!R could
assist in correcting a situation which exists et the United Stetes Penitentiary,
Lewisburg, -@., and involves ALGER HTSS, JOHN WILLIAWSON, and MAURICE BRAVERMAN,
He said this situation also applied to CARL WINT@R prior to his transfer.
LISHANSKY stated several years ego he was vrivate secretary to
LOUIS WEINSTIGK and was a svecial organizer of Local lh2, Brotherhood of Painters,
Paperhangers, and Decoretors of America, AFOL, District Council #9. He said
evidently for the above reason, HISS, WINTFR, "BRAVERMAN , and WILLIAWS OV assumed
that he is one of them end regarded him es such Since they make a svecial effort
to talk to him. He stated on one occasion WINTER indicated to him that he would
be on easy street when he was releesed, and WILLIAMSON offered to instruct him
in regerd to union activities, LISHENS KY was of the opinion these two are groom-
ing hir to take WEINSTOCK's place after his release, but edvised neither had
ever made a direct statement to this effect, LISHANSKY advised that he was never
connected with Communist activities and "wanted no part of it."
LISHENS KY edvised that he learned fror talking to HISS, WINTER,
WILLIAMSON, and BRAVERMAN that there apvears to be 2 determined effort on their
rart to carry on @ strong recruiting drive on behelf of the CP in which they
try to interest some of the inmates, especially those who will leeve the neni-
tentiery in the neer future, in the theory of Communism. He stated it appeers
thet a directed effort is being mede to win the friendshin of inmates who heve
been denied v@role, and in a short time will be conditionally released, He
stated CARL WINTFR indicated to him that this same vrocedure was being followed
in other venitentiaries,
He stated that BRAVFRMEN, through his knowledge of law, is able
to win the friendship of inmetes by essisting them with their legal papers. He
stated WILLIAVOOW and WINTER rely on their intelligence end oretory to win friends,
He steted HISS, who has no ccntact with the others in the open, but does talk:
to them in the library and elsewhere when no one is observing him. He states
HISS envears to soend ell his time in cultivating the friendship of the Sicilian
inmetes, who e@re regarded es the "strong-erm boys" among the inmetes, When en
inrate needs protection, YISS makes an effort to contect this inmate and offers
