In the Spring of 1922, it wae reported that
Subject, an alleged German Communist, was expected to
arrive in the United States, for the purpose of deliver-
ing a series of lectures here, and that she was to be
met in New York by Rose Weiss, well known communist
lewyer. According to the manifest of the 8.S. "George
Washington" whih arrived in New York from Bremen on April
29, 1922, after Subject's name, there appeared the
following: “Age, 32; occupation, student; birthplace,
Helberstadt, Germany; father's name, Gustav Baer; address,
Haneseter No. 76, Hamburgh, Germany; going to Miss Jane
Addams, Hull House, Chicego, Ill. to stay for two months;
final destination Munchen, Germany; height 5'5"; hair,
brown; eyes, brown.”
Subject was interviewed by the Immigratipn °
Inspector. She stated that she was coming hereto lecture
and that a committee of the W.I.L. (Women’s Internetional
League for Peace and Freedom) was to meet her at the pier;
that she had never been in the United States; that her
passage to this country was paid by the above-named com-
mittee, who would also pay her expenses to Chicago. She
was held for the Board of Special Inquiry at Eliis Island.
Prior to her examination before this Board, three ettempts
were nede by delegates to the W.I.L. to assist Subject
to land, in violation of the Immigration Laws, so that
@ special guard had to be posted by the ship's officers
to prevent further interference.
‘After Subject had been admitted.to this country,
she, in company with Mrs. Arnot Robinson of Manchester,
England and Mile. Therese-Pottecher~Arnold of Paris, also
sent to this country to attend the convention of the W.I.L.
Spoke at various places in the East, including Boston,
Pittsburgh, Wellesley College, Smith College and other8&,
Gertrade Baer speaks French, German and English. |
