ton ‘Hotel, with Chairman Jane Addams presiding. he subject ef the meeting was the
Atcarmament of the textbooks heing wsed in the schools today.
fhe first. speaker to address the meting was im. Seheu Riefs, who atated that
the new pacifist wants all textbooks abolished that make heroes cut of warriors, and
books of real poets and literati pot in their plase. She stated that an attempt $o
alter the minds of the elder people would be practically useless, and that such an
alteration should be brought about in the minds of the ehildren 85 early as possible.
Mme. Scheu Riets suggested that the schoolroom be tarned into # big library and that
| gach child be given ten books of his own choice. She said that in France the chil-
dren were given # chance to ehoose the books they liked best, and the first three
choices were, first, Gretchen, & German book, second, American stories, and third,
Italien stories.
Dr. Ethel Wittens of England was the next speaker, the subject of her address
being the wpoiigies! Aspect of & New International Order. « Dr. Williams expressed
the opinion that the Versailles Treaty was & a “child of fear,” and that its use is
erusl end false. She declared that all post war activities are wach that sll nations
are afraid of each other, thet the reason gor pilitery alliance with Polend was
gear, thet the nations refuse to recognize Rnuesia because Of fear, that Britain is
‘‘etraid to recognise and, make trade with Rnssia because she fears wer would result.
