A weekly organizational bulletin of the "North Ameri- can Comnittee to Aid Spanisa Democracy” dated May 19, 1937, page 5, states that JAMES CAGNEY was a sponsor of tne Los Angeles Chapter of the above organization in 1937. Aid Spanish Democracy The North American Committee to Un- was cited as a Communist front by tae Special Committee on American Activities January 3; 19h0. Tae publication "Social Justice" for April 10, 1939, formerly published by Reverend CHARLZS\COUGILIN, contains an article uncer the caption "Communism ig Passe; It's ‘Democracy’ now". The article reacs in part as follows: "Communism is out of date, it has socially taxen over the more respectable name of Lamocracy. AND the cultural center for this Communist tramocracy! is to be the new Yollywoed. The photograpn peferred to above was recrinted in tne "Social Justice" issue of April 10, 1939 crevicusly mentioned, and included in the group of seven individuals appearing in the photograph was JAMES CAGNSY. The above issue of "Social Justice” eliso carried a pnhotograpa of an ambulance togetner with a placard reading "The Motion Picture Artists Committee sends this ambulance to aelp the Gefenders of Spanish Democracy". Standing alongside the anbulance in tne paotograpn appeared LION=SL STANDSR. Among the several names listed on tne side of the ambulence appearsc the name TAMZS CAGN=Y. Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy General on April 21, 199 to fall The North American wes declared by the Attorney within the purview of Bxecutive Order 9835.
