Removed from Olfice of Former Director J. E. Hoover
DETAILS
By way of background, the Attorney General in June, 1975, requested
that an injuiry be conducted as to whether any olficial files were removed from
Mr. Eoover's olfice to his residence following his death ard may have been sub-
sequently removed from that residcnce following the death of Clyde A. Tolson.
A sunimary of the inquiry dated 7/3/75, which reflected interview of 100 indi-
viduals, \.5 furnished to the Department and it was reported that no information

Subsequert inquiry established movement of property from Mr. Hoover's office
includini; 2warcs, plaqucs, news articles and editorials, anniversary messages,
photographs, editorial cartoons, ccrtificates, diplomas, degrees, athletic
trophics aru miscellaneous items, some of which also micht be classified as
personal property of hir. Hoover. This property was removed under the
direction of Liiss Heicn W. Candy, former zxecutive Assistant to Mr. Hoover,
who determined which items were personal and to be taken to Mr. Hoover's house
or which were to be retained by the FUT for possible later use for historical
purpcses. ‘lids property was paciiayed by employees from the Special Projects
Scction following hir. lioover's death and was then trangported by employees from
the former i.iechanical Section to the Taylor Street warehouse for storage where
it remaincd for approximately 6 months. It was then removed intact and trans-
ferred to x1 stora‘te space in the General Accounting Cifice (GAO) Building and
was then frucsequently moved approximately November, 1973, from GAO to space
occupled ty the Special Projects Scction in the Old Post Office (OPO) Bullding
for conslucration for public display in the new J. Edgar Hoover Building. This
material cuutinues to be located in space under control of the Special Projects
Section in the OPO and J: H Buildings with a limited number of items being
placed on public display on the FBI tour route.
No inquiry was received concerning this material but substantial detail
regardin” ine movement and retention of same by the FLI was included in reports
of intervicwe with 4 ipecial Projects Section employces reviewed by Senate Sclect
Comunitice (SC) rcpreeentatives during September and October, 1975. Results
of these f:terviews were furnished to the Department 11/17/75.
