BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF JOHN EDGAR HOOVER
DIFECTOR, FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
April 1, 1960
Jot born January 1, 1895, in the Diatriet of
Columbia. He was educated in the public echools of the District of Columbie
and received LL.B and LL.M Degrees from George Washington University. He
holds Honorery Degrees from George Wedhington University, Pennsylvania
Military College, New York University, Dreke University, Westminster
College, Oklsehome Baptist University, Georgetown University, Notre Deme
University, St, John's University Lew School, Rutgers University, the
University of Arkenses, Seton Hell College end Holy Cross College. He holds
an Honorery Degree of Doctor of Science from Kalemerco College end an
Honorery Degree of Doetor of Civil Laws from the University of the South.
Mr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice in 1917, and in 1919,
was eppointed Specia] Aseistent to the Attorney General. From 1921 until
1924 he served es Assistent Director of the Buresu of Investigstion end in
May, 1924, he wee named Director.

Mr. Hoover is a member of the Masonic Order; Keppe Alphe Fraternity;
Omicron Delte Kappa; Delte Theta Fhi; Alpha Phi Omege, and Zete Sigma Pi.
He ja a member of many netional and stete-wide lew enforcement assccistions.
He is a trustee of the George Washington Univereity; e trustee of
the National Presbyterian Church; s member of the Board of Directors of the
Central Dispensery and Emergency Hospital, Washington, D. C.; ® member of
the Boserd of Directore of the Boys' Clubs of America; and s member of the
Netione] Committee on Public Reletions of the Boy Scouts of Ansrica,
He has been sdmitted to practice lew before the bar of the District
Court of the United States for the District of Columbie, the United States
Court of Cieims, end the United States Supreme Court.
On Mareh & 1946, Mr. Hoower was presented the Medel of Merit by
the President of the United States,
On October 27, 1949, Mr. Hoover was awerded the "Theodore Roosevelt
Distinguished Service Medal" by the Roosevelt Memories] Associsetion.
On March 6, 1960, Mr. Hoover wes elected es an Active Member of the
