John Edgar Hoover was born January 1, 1895, in the Diatrict
of Columbia. He vas educated in the public schools of the District
of Columbia ani received Bachelor of Iavs and Master of Lava degrees
from The George Washington Untversity. He holds honorary degrees
from The George Washington Untuersity, Pennsylvania Military College,
New York University, Kalamazoo College, Westminster College, Okla-
homa Siptist lintversity, Georgetown University, Drake Untversity,
University of the South, Motre Dame University, St. John's Univeratty
Law School, Rutgers University, University of Arkansas, Holy Cross
College, Seton Hall College, Marquette Untuersity and Pace College.
Mr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice in 1917, and
in 1919, ne was appointed Special Asstatant to the Attorney General.
From 1921 until 1924 he served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of
Investigation and tn May, 1924, he was named Director.
ifr. Hoover ts a member of the Masonic Order; Kappa Alpha
Fraternity; Omicron Delta Kappa; Delta Theta Phi; Alpha Pht Omega; and
Zeta Sigma Fi. He 48 a member of many national and state-wide Jaw en-
forcement associations. He is a trustee of The George Washington Uni-
versity; a@ member of the Board of Directors of the Boys’ Clubs of
America; a@ member of tne National Committee on Public kelations of the
Boy Scouts of America; and an Active Member of the Grand Counctl of the
Order of DeMolay.
He has been admitted to practice law before the bar of the
District Court of the United States for the District of Columbia, the
United States Court of Claims, and the United States Supreme Court.
On March 8, 1946, Mr. Hoover was presented the Medal of Merit
by the President of the United States. On December 30, 1951, the
Jewish bur Veterans of the United States of America presented Mr. Hoover
"The Gold Medal of Merit" citation for "outstanding service in safe-
guarding the security of the United States of America against Communiat
conspiracy and subversion."
On June 25, 1952, the Associated Credit Bureaus of America
Presented Mr. Hoover their Credit dward "for distingutahed contribu-
tions to the Advar.cement and Protection of the American Way of Life."
On May 22, 1953, Mr. Hoover was presented with the Diatin-~
guished Serytce Citation of the All American Conference to Combat
Communiam "for absolutely vital service rendered to the United States
of America and to freedom everywhere in the world,"
On May 10, 1954, Honorable Herbert Brownell, Jr., Attorney
General of the United States, Guarded Mr. Hoover a@ Certificate of Merit
in recognition of his service as Director of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation for thirty yearge
