It is appropriate that in these days we especially honor those whe
wore in charge of activities that had to do with winning World War 2. We
honor our servicemen who were in the air, on the seas, under the seas end en
Jaad in all the theatres of war acattered over the entire globe. We hanor the
comanding officers of our great fleets - of our air forces - our marines - and
our great armies. At thiw moment we also honor the comsander-inechief ef
another great army of our government, the agents of the MBI, the army whieh
made it porsible for us to live without bloodshed at home and fulfill eur part
as tne arsenal of 411 the united nationg in this sonfliet.
We oxpresa our gratitude, our admiration, our affection, fer
Lr. hoover in presenting him with our most valued award, the Distinguished
Service Medal of The Amerioaa Legion. Mr. Hoever should know that this medal is
worn ty fewer porsous than any other decoration, uot even excepting the
Congressional Medal of Henor. This is not because many would not prise it, but
rather because we reserve it for those fow persons whose performance has
ugaisteaxeably placed them abeve ani beyond the customary attributes of a
distinziished citizen. Mr. Hoover has more than met, and continues te meet, the
highest standards we have fixed for these who may wear it. He is a great
American. The truth of his deeds seems stranzer than fiction, yet he has
aocupted fame and acclaim with the modesty that always proelaims real genius.
He is known and honored by all good Americans - his anly enemies
are our enemies. In the fulfillaent of the duties of his high offiee, he daily
exemplifies the principles of our organisation. Of the 26 persons whe have
now been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of The American Legian, none
is more worthy than J. gdgar Hoover, Direotor of the Pederal Bureau ef
Investigation.
