Jt wes likewise agreed that any coumtry joining the Commission after Jenusry 1, 1947, should be recuired to pay supplementary indemnity of 3,000 Sug With regard tc the Bureau's assessment, since it has been decided that the Bureau is to become a regular member of the organization, it should be ncted that itr. Louwage in e letter to the Bureau dated July 9, 1946, referred to the satter of dues. He seid thet he was aware that the Bureau might find the rate too high for é ete of ecnsiderable population and for this reason, during the convention he suzzestec the amount assessed azsinst ecumtries of large populetions, such as the U.S.5. and the 'U.S.5.2., be left to the discretion of those governments. He edded that if the United States should decide thet its contribution should equal thet of a etate with sixty million inhabitants, the General Secretary would be only tee glad to receive it. In the enswer to Louwage's letter cf July 9, which went out from the Bureau Jon furtust 13, 1926, he wes told that his suggestion eas to the aporopriete annual essess- [ie it ta be paid by the United States was being given further study and that he would be in formed concerning it in.the nesr future. According to the New York Times for Aucust 1, 1946, the Swiss franc is pegged at 23.40 cents. If we figured the Bureau's assessment at 2,50 Swiss franes per 25,900 inhabitants with a ceiling of sixty million inhabitents, es suzgested by Mr. Louwace, the Pureau'ts annutl assessment would amcunt to #1,404. This amount is fust short of the “1500 which has been included in the Bureau's eppropriations since 1938.
