a g ‘ JOHN EDGAR HOOVER -_ . _ DIRECTOR . . PEF: Cli Federal Rurean of Investigation Ruited States Arpartment of Justice i / Washingtan, B.C. May 19, 1937. ° Time ~ 10:20 A.M. re: Opindenburg. SAC Devereaux telephoned me from Lakehurst and said thet lete lest night he received a call from Command Rosendahl, who said that he wanted to discuss certain matters with him personally rhich he could not explain over the telephone. Mr. Devereeux went dow to Lakehurst end contacted Commancer Rosendahl, who seid that during the course of the testimony which hes been given in connection with this Matter, it developed that the fire probably originated in or about Motor No. 4 of the ship. The testimony showed that the pessenvers were not allowed to frequent the vicinity of the motor gondolas rithout being accompanied by en officer or e member of the cre. Hovever, the testimony showed that there was on board this ship an acrobat by the name of Joseph Spach. This men had two pet dogs which were placed in a compertment in the aft of the ship, and he had a habit of going to see his dogs without being accompenied by an officer or a member of the crew. The innuendo of the entire matter is that this acrobat could have climbed out on the motor gondola, removed the cover on the exheust pipe of the motor, end allowed the flames to set fire to the fabric and explode the hydrogen. Commender Rosendahl wanted to know if the Bureau could conduct an investi- gation of this man, with particular reference to his personal history, his background, criminal tendencies, etc. This man was placed in the hospital at Asbury Park, New Jersey due to injuries received at the time of the incident, but he was discharged and left his forward ng address se Douglaston, Long Island. I told Mr. Devereeux that this request rould be submitted to the Director for a decision, and we would let him know thet to do about it. wart’ TED ee TE aN aoe . : ers PL ED Respectfully, Pix GQ4l!
