Commander Rosendahl at this time suggested that it might be a good idea for a representative of the Bureau to interview Captain Wittemann, as he has been given to understand that all of.the members of the German cren'would be ready and willing to cooperate with the appropriate authorities of the Uited States in connection with the sabotage theory. Regarding the suggestion that_Captain Wittemann be inter- viewed by a representative of the Bureau,Hr. Foxworth stated that no action should be taken in connection therewith until further ad- vice was received by me from the Bureau. Special Agent Malone and myself again conferred with Commander Rosendahl at Lakehurst at 5 p. m. on May 19, 1957, at which time Commander Rosendahl stated that a further discovery had been made that would help support the sabotage theory. As has been related to the Bureau, in connection Idth the instant case, in the communication dated May ll, 195?, forwarded by Inspector E. J. Connelley, the authorities at Iakehurst had been in communication with the Bomb squad of the New York Police Depart- ment. For the information of the Bureau, Detective McCarthy of the New York Bomb Squad, has been at Lakehurst and has conducted some investigation of the ruins of the dirigible Hindenburg. Detective KcCarthy has previously informed that were negative and that the only thing evidence of a severe explosion in the Naturally, the type of explosion that the ship was not known and it is true the results of his examination he was able to ascertain was after part of the ship- had occurred in the stern of that such an explosion could have been caused by the igniting of the hydrogen gas after it had been mixed with the proper amount of air.
