- ° I desire to refer to your telephonic _UATEZz/e2 8 HY me toda DoF 363
regarding the captioned matter and to my memorandum to you dated May 18, 196.
Pursuant to your request, I huve had discreet inquiries mide in the Wallace
matter.
The New York office of this Bureau has attempted to discreetly as-
certain the identity of the shop in which the flyers were printed. It has been
deterzined that the union stamp showing local Ne. 1, Union Shop Ne. 100 indicated
: that the flyer could have been lithographed-in any one of the hundreds of shops
: in New York City. In view of this fact, I do not feel that we can make any
, additional discreet inquiries concerning this matter through established informants
or otherwise without havin such inquiries brought to Mr. Wallace's attention.
° 4s will be noted in my previous memorandum, Miss Dorothy Thompson,
“* } the eclumnist, has expressed a deep interest in the Wallace matter. Miss Thompson
3” | is of the definite opinion that Mr. Fallace had advance information from the
ox, | Russian Embassy in Washington, D. C. or the Russian Consulate in New York City
\. 2 concerning the Smith-Molotov conversations. She has pointed out that the first
* release on these conversations came as 4 result of a CBS news broadcast at 6:55 Py
NN on May 10, 19,8 and further details were carried on the 11:00PM news broadcast on
< ‘all major radio stations. Miss Thompson atated that the flyers were distributed
~s at the political meeting in Madison Square Garden in New York City. ‘at approximately |
~~ 10:30 PX on May 11, 198. kiss Thompson stated that Mr. Wallace in-his speech ; ra
YN that evenine stated that he had chanved the first paragraph-of this flyer after “<.
/ receiving information on tha Smitheifolotev conversations in Yoscow. Misa Thomp-\..
i son was of the opinion that it was a physical impossibility to make this changed
A ‘and have the new flyers lithographed and distributed within the space of a little
/ wore than 2 hours. It would appear therefore, that Miss Thompson's belief that
> Mr. Wallace had advance information regarding the Moscow release, is based pri-
{> marily on hur conclusion that there was not sufficient tice for the preparation
' of this flyer.
