WALLACE was the principal speaker. This vl meeting was opened by Dr. a .--Human-Welfare, who criticized the : segregation laws of Virginia and-stated-that-——" =~ » President of the Southern Conference for , they would not accept race segregation, and also stated "if the officers of the law will not allow us to continue our meeting here we will walk into the streets and hold our meeting.". It was observed that with the exception of JERRY 0 7 AGELLIAM, President of the NAACP, and a few other colored men who sat on the right-hand side of the City Auditorium, which was occupied by white people and ALIGRYBURKE, Presi- dent, CP, USA, District 26, Reverend CHARLES GyUEBBER, President of Virginia State CIO, and a few other white people who sat on the other side of the auditorium with the Negroes, the crowd was segregated according to race. _~ This meeting was opened by short talks by Dr. Qi Mrs, CLIFFOR of Alexandria, Vice-President of the SCHW; GEORGRAELWOOD, a - known active” Communist Party menber who is Chairman of the Norfolk hapter of the Southern Conference for Human Welfare, active in the American Veterans’ Committee, U and the CIO Political Action Director for this area, as well as b ing Business /“V* Representative for Local 26 of the FTAAWA; and Mrs. VIVIAN CAR PAS rs among Negro women who has traveled extensively in Europe ‘including 1S Si. AH Lf. In his speech, HENRY A. WALLACE ‘declared that he was not er radical but was a liberal, He stated that he was frequently accused of being a radical and he was tired of good people being called Comnmumists—that Communism does not deserve that much credit. 4e stated that we had nothing to fear from Communism in this country unless there would be a severe depression. He accused _the United States of following the pattern of the early Hitler era and said the Un-American Committee is a key part of the gigantic conspiracy against the American people. Mr, WALLACE mentioned the FBI and stated that Mr. HOOVER had said that he would not di. ot dignify ¢ a remark of Mr. WALLACE! s_ even m by a denial. He went on to state, "I wonder if Mr. HOOVER will, comment on this." He further’ ‘stated the FBI is ftr- nishing ‘unsolicited reports to the FCC containing nothing but gossip about the activities of private radio operators, He stated this information had come to him'directly from Mr. DURR, employed by the FCC, who is the husband of Mrs, VIRGINIA 7 ; Vice-President: of ‘thé SCHW.A He had. previously indicated that Mrs. DURR's brothe —in-law, whose name was not mentioned, was a member of the Supreme Court.
