ATTEMPTS TO PREVENT WALLACE TALK NOTEv: Moscow, TASS, Soviet Overseas Service, in English Morse t to Worth America, June 15, 1947, 9:10 p.m. EST--P - ; (Text) "New York--The progressive organization 'The Southern Conference for Human Welfare’ planned to hold a mass: meeting: on June 16.in the large Washing- ton ‘Watergate Amphitheater' (which is under the control of the Interior seenidateiiaiaaiediamied ~~Depar tment~-TASS) , at which former Vice’ Presiden Wallace ‘was “scheduled tw NU MN S : » to speak. “american reactionary circles, alarmed by the success of the Wallace tour: throughout the United States, are attempting to interfere with his forth- coming speech before an audience at, the Washington meeting. The unofficial reactionary organization, the 'American Anti-Comaunist Association, ! headed by Republican Congressman O'Konski of Wisconsin, petitioned the U.S. District Court’ on June 13 to issue a court order directing Secretary of © the Interior Krug to deny Wallace the right to utilize the Interior Depart- ment's amphitheater, upon the grounds that Wallace's methods 'incite human emotions toward riot and insurrection. ' a j “Moreover, the petition points out that the sponsor of the nieeting, 'The _ Southern Conference for Human Welfare! had been called - a 'Communist front' organization by the House of Representatives Committee forthe Investi- gation of Un-American Activities. It is expected that, the court: will hold. a hearing on this matter on June 16. "As reported by the Washington correspondent of FM, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee for the Investigation of Un-American ‘Activities Thomas (Republican from New Jersey--TASS) announced that the - committee will send to Washington,to attend, the Wallace meeting scheduled for June 16,'several observers,' in order to ¢heck upon the persons who appear upon the speaker's platform and to analyze any literature which may be distributed at the meeting. "PM says ‘Wallace, who is now in New York commented: ‘Thomas! real purpose is to rrighten Government employees, in order that they will not attend the meeting.’ Thomas announced that the Un-American Activities Committee is preparing to publish June 15, one day prior to the Wallace meeting, a new 'report' upon 'The Southern Conference For Human Welfare,' in which this organization is accused of an ‘alliance with the: ‘Communist Front. ! “Speaking in the House of Representatives several days ago Congressman Meyer, Republican from Kansas, demanded that the Attorney General indict Waiiéze on charges of treason.
