Even more than most veople who want peace and security you
are seriously disturbed as you contemplate the way.in which both
Russia and the United States are oehaving. American capitalisn,
if it continues to be mariaged in the future as it has-in the past,
will inevitably produce worldeshaking depressions which can easily
result in dictatorships in many countries and eventually war for
tho whole world. : ;

Aw,
I have come to Scandinavia because it is time to bulid up a
middle path of international feoling, not against Russian commune
ism nor aguinst American capitalism, but for a practical comuon
man's democracy based on a suitable development of cooperatives,
of small ‘tusiness, of river valley and atomic exergy authorities
with overeali monetary and fiscal policies nanaged according to
the principles worked out by your foremost sconomists. Such a
democracy will find its first perfect manifestation in northwestern
Europe, Switzerland, Australia, or Wew Zealand. Such a democracy
cannot be safe until the capitalistic democracy of the United |.
States controls dopressions, finds’a basis for labor sreace and
oliminates the possibility of a war with lussia. :
The common man in. the “nited States and Sweden looks with
horror on the continuous drive toward war which is being carried
on in certain circles. I have come to Sweden not to appeal to the
intellectual Loft but to the nonebelligerent, to the pacifist,
. Right. The reason why I am appealing particularly in Swedon to the
non-bolligerent Right is because in the Scandinavian countries tho
employors have given so many desonstrations of their understandiny
and willingnoss to cooperate with trade unions and cooperatives
in order to increase, the prosperity of the common people.
I refuse to velieve that all people with mgncy want war with
Russia. On the contrary I am certain that many wealthy business-
men are convinced that it is. possiblo to work out a system for
living at peace in the sametworld with a nonimperLalistic caplital-
istic United States and a nonimperialistic commmistic Russia. The
people of both countries desperately want peace , but the people une
fortunately are being inflamed by propaganda. The leaders of both
countries are certain that they can get advantages by pressure
methods short of war. Unfortunately these pressure methods run
the risk of war. Also tiese mothods require huge investnents in
it
nts by the United States, Rugsia, ands ain: Also these
methods Fequire putt tieal foan: and iaitocest neing, as for ex-
ample the Jritish and American finaycing of the Turkish and Greek
arsenals. rn re -
This is a dolicate subject hore dn Sweden, which aside from
the aforementioned three Great-Powers is one of the few arms proe
ducing countries in the world today. Iv hope. that overybody hold-
