speak. This paper wrote that nothing short of a regular
mass meeting ought to have been arranged: “The interest
in that ‘other dmerica' which Wallace represents so_ ade
mirably is not confined to a small clique of radicals and
Liberal intellectuals. Thousands of friends of peace in
Stockholm missed this unique opportunity to see and listen
. to Awerica's peace evangelist number one."
Otherwise, there were very few editorial comments on lr.
Wallace's speech. It appeared to be felt that he had added
but little to his earlior declarations which had already
been extensively commented on by the Swedish press. However,
the Liberal-Christian SVENSKA MONGONBLADET, which from its
own ethical standpoint had previcusly oxpressed much admira=
tion for Henry Wallace beeauso of his porgonal, chastity and
ideallam, in ea leading article on April 19 took a very
critical attitude toward Lr. Wallace's fornign-political
theses, saying in parts '
"It Lg totally absurd to naintaln that the
Truman regime and the Congress Foreign Relations
Committees are bent on war. They want to safce
guard peace, but they believe, @ Roosevelt did,
that this wld mot be posasivile by incessant cone
laisance and pacifist paroles. The ieaders of
forican foreipn policy surely also want to wake-
the United Wations a strong instrument of peace,
but tho Ui. does not have that strong position
as yet. Wallace's eager citing of that interna-
tionale appears rather an empty phrasd if it right
now came to solving quickly a practical difficulty
for a small nation. Wallace's appearances before
the meeting in Stockhoim gave the imp?ession of
obscure jud ent. For example, what 4s one to say
about his phraset ‘I refuse to believe that ail
people with money want war with Russia’. Such is
nonsense .™
Another Liberal newspaper, UPSALA NYAITIDNING, one of the
yery few Swedish press organs to take a truly factual interest
in the work of the United Nations, wholeheartedly subscribed
to re Wallace's appeal for increased support cf the U.N., but
added the following reservations in a leading articlo on
April 22:
"Wallace is touring those countries whore he
believes he will find some response,’ Iie does not
address himself to the governments, he has no dipe
lomatic mission. He speaks to the pcoples, he is
seeking to arouse public movementse His words vould
carry greater woight, however, wore he not in many
quarters looked upon as being partial in Russian
favor, something for which he has himself to blame
because of certain earlier, less reliable stateuonts."
