POPEYE - 12
a homosexual, mnde checks and folse 1.D, and Popeye recruited people to cash
them. He took sister S., an ex-con, and sister S. to Modesto in March, 1971,
to caoh checks. They immediately got busted. In Modesto he met a third sis-
ter 5S. who wan seventeen, pregnant, and destitute. She became Fva Purcell and
they went to Sacramento to cash checks. The false I.D. wasn't very good and
she got busted immediately. By July, it was counterfeit money and brother Al,
“Fittle Alt, was the patsy. The plates, reportedly made in San Quentin, were
not very good, and they were quickly busted. The money was in Little Al's
hand and Popeye fot cut loose again. Iirother Al ended up in Folsom, hating
Popeye; sister Jerry is dead.
Brother John was involved in some of these ventures and got busted three times.
He wan bitter because Popeye never made any effort to help him while he was in
jail: "..,didn’t even send me cigarettes". John tells of two brothers jacking
Popeye up on Mission street with shotguns and almost killing him. They took
all his money, which was quite a bit. He tried to get John and others from the
UPU to kill one or both of them but nobody would go for it; he made no effort to
do anything himself. ;
!
Popeye had always been into guns. Sally says: “Usually, he used women as
holsters. He would frequently have a gun in their purse, or act like he had
a gun in their purse, and play a big heavy..." In May, 1972, he and brother
J, were busted with two pistols and a hot car while on the way to a Prison Day
Symposium where they were to speak. The gun charges were dismissed because
the search was illegal and brother Je-rode the hot car beef, The word on the
yard at Folsom is that Popeye snitched but brother J, will neither confirm
nor deny it. It seems likely; the peoples! court reviewed remarks made to a
Counselor at the prison that - at the leost - could have been harmful to J.
