Open Letter to the People
_ We are ex-meubers of the Sytbionese Federation. We resigned collectively froz .
the Federation inmtediztely after the esSassination_of Dr. Marcus Foster. ‘Se had
intended simply to dissociate ourselves from the SLA in rractice, by ceasing to vork
vith them. . Since tke kidnapping of Patricia Hearst and the Publication of the _
Declaration, however, we feel compelled to make a rublic statenent concernins our
criticisms-of-the SLA and our history with the Federation, because ef their destracive @
misrerresentation of the revolutionary movement. ‘he obvious first step is to eeal
with the SLA's tragie misuse of violence.
The revolutionary role of "necessary" violence is the opposite of what the SLA
~~ ——nettlieves, and practices, as recently, where they @ecided, se- arately from the rest
of the Federation, to murier Foster. Violence alone cannot begin a revolutionary
-Tactice, out only the feilure of that “-ractice: useless seif-secrifice. ‘iolence,
when necessary, can sanvort revolutionary stratesy, but never ori:inate or-iuetify | __
it. - ’ ;
- ‘By resorting to abstract violence, the SLA not only separated itself ffon the
rest of the revolutionary movement, but became the example to avoid, the sterestyre
_of the "med terrorist” so indispensable to our oppressors to put us down even more
with new laxs and restrictions. The Surest way to dictatorship is a revolutionary
movement represented ty crovocateurs. “owever, re have not &iven and will not give
information regarding our lecation or the Yocation of the SLA to the authorities,
fer the folloving reasons: . .
1} “hile we no longer consider the SLA to ve a genuinely revclutionary ergan- i
"ization, we are nce friends of Randolrh Hearst or the class to whici: he belcnss, that ;
is, the class which owns and controls the means of life -- the factcries, land, i
schools, comaunications, and much of the housing -- in the United States, ard through-
out the werld.
~ 2) we are fuliy aware of the biased end politically repressive nature of the .
"Justice" systen which would use our past connection with the SLA to frane us for the 7
revolutionary movemert and halt our activity.
3) We are in hiding since the split, expecting reprisals from the SLA. .
