‘This. concerns the ongoing trial of Patricia ‘Campbell Hearst
in’ San Francisco, California, on 3/8/76.
Attached advises Judge Carter ruled that Doctor Joel Fort
(prosecution witness who is criminologist and physician) woulda
be allowed to testify on issue of coercion. Doctor Fort testi-
fied thatgHearst, from his examination of all materials avail-
able, ha voluntarily participated in the bank robbery @s,
member ofgthe SLA. Doctor Fort developed comparison wit a

independent, strong-willed, rebellious, and intelligent but
not intellectually inclined. -He mentioned her rebellion ati’
school and the fact that she was sexually active at age 15. a -
Her relationship with Steven Weed was one of growing dissatis-
faction and recounts Hearst's thoughts about suicide when she
‘was faced with her commitment to wed which ‘she did not want to _
do. Hearst told Fort regarding her sexual “contact with members
of SLA that she agreed to have sex "because, it/would save my _
life." Hearst did not tell Fort that she“had Been raped. .
Doctor Fort's study of the background ofs,SLA.members led him
to conclusion that they were not sufficientlyaskilled, trained,
‘Or knowledgeable to utilize attitude change or “toercive
persuasion. Doctor Fort testified that Hearst's persuasion to
the position of SLA soldier was similar to experience of con-
verts to "hippiedom.” vas
On cross examination, r £tée Bailey (defense counsel) point-
ed out that Doctor Fort had ‘not ‘completed graduate work in
psychology and that he was note professor (full) of University
'of California although he lectured, there. Bailey asked Fort
—.about his World Health Organization.l6é patient study on mind
altering drugs and jails, prisons and mental hospitals express-
ing skepticism that such a study could be completed--in only a
few months.
Bailey questioned Doctor Fort regarding a press release he
had made recently concerning a "frame of reference on expert
testimony." Doctor rfort, admitted drawing up a compilation of
his concern regarding, extensive media coverage which he ~
provided to Newsweektand ten or fifteen other news persons.
Bailey read Fort’ sWinews release” before the jury over the
objection by the prosecution.
