The cartridge is a very old one. it is one of the orig- inal Mauser cartridges and came out in the early 1890's right after the 8x5? and 65x57. The cart- ridge was originally designed for the Spanish government and the first Mauser rifle to be chambered for it in quantity was the Model 1893. Many surplus military rifles have been imported recently.
