Gi ex’ A) ‘eo BUREAU OF NvesTICAn’® ay Dote of tronseciption __May 22, 2974 THOMAS DEAN MATTHEWS, 10871 Elm Street, Lynwood, California, was intervieved at the Office of the FBI, 1L1OOO - Wilshire Boulevard, and furnished the following information: MATTHEWS stated that he and the individual whom he tentatively identified as WILLTAM HARRIS, engaged in conver~ Satlon. MATTISWS stated that at one point he asked HARRIS, ' "Why did you rob the bank?" HARRIS replied that they needed the money and that it was not easy to obtain funds for what they, the Symbionese Liberation Army, were doing, This state- ment was made to MATTHEWS approximately ten-minutes after HARRIS entered the van, MATTHEWS stated that the individual that he positively identified as PATRICIA CAMPBELL HEARST stated during the same conversation that she was 2 voluntary participant in ° the bank robhery in San Francisco, California. She also added that she carried a loaded weapon at her side and she always carrles if in that position’and was definitely free to use it at any time during the bank robbery. She added that they planned the bank robbery so carefully that they would not have to turn their guns more than a few degrees for complete coverage, and no guns were pointed at her. HARRIS then added that with enough people and proper timing they could rob a bank. PATRICIA then stated that they hed to rob the bank within a minute and a half in order to get away safely, When they were driving around prior to going to the drive-in theater, they heard a news broadcast over the radio concerning the attempted shoplifting in Inglewood, NARRIS then. advised he had shoplifted a bandolier because it would have . been too obvious if he were to purchase it. The person MATTHEWS positively identified as EMILY HARRIS, the driver of the van, stated the reason HARRIS got caught shoplifting was because it was a gun store and there was more security than they had realized, 5/19/74 o__LOS Angeles, California fy, 4 Los Angeles 7-1L6527 interviewed on — miT/rsr/sam/KAH 5/20/74 Dete dictated This documcol containg neither recommendations nor conciusions of the FB.
