At approximately 9:00 a.m., May 17, 1974, FBI Special Weapons _ and Tactics (SWAT) Team, accompanied by LAPD. SWAT Team, sur- rounded 833 West 84th Street, and announced their presence, - When no response came from within, an LAPD Officer fired seven tear gas projectiles through the front windows of the residence, . Moments later members of FBI SWAT Team entered the residence -and determined it to be emoty, Search of residence determined — admitted SLA members had occupied it and from all indications had recently left. On the morning of May 17, 1974, Lynwood, California, Police Department advised THOMAS DEAN MATTHEWS was a possible kidnap victim and that a 1963 Chevrolet Nova Station 7 Wagon, California license GOE 575, had been recovered near ~. ° MATTHEWS!’ residence, Shortly thereafter MATTHEWS returned to Ra his residence and advised he had been held captive in his 1969 ..' + | Ford van by individuals Subsequently identified as WILLIAM TAYLOR Hens HARRIS, EMILY MONTAGUE HARRIS, and PATRICIA CAMPBELL HEARST, _, °° MATTHEWS furnished a signed statement indicating HEARST had A handled and loaded weapons and stated to him she had joined 7 | the SLA, had taken part in a bank robbery in the San Francisco, California, area, and had fired the shots at Mel's Sporting Goods Store, Inglewood, California, during the afternoon of May 16, 1974, MATTHEWS stated he was released at approximately . 1:00 a.m., and pointed out loeation of his release on Outpost Drive in the Hollywood, California, area. During early after- - noon, May 17, 1974, FRANK RICHARD SUTTER advised he had been. t kicnapped by three individuals who identified themselves as t members of the SLA, who he believed to be WILLIAM TAYLOR HARRIS, | | t EMILY MONTAGUE HARRIS, and PATRICIA CAMPBELL HEARST.
