we o——. Memorandum to Mr. Gebhardt e” Re: HEARNAP i ‘he? indicated he and his Army would fight to death, that-he had j,Otfer children who could carry on his fight, and that they would . itage a lot of "pigs" down with them. He indicated he had five Rother white people with him and they knew they were going to die. Of interest is a statement in ®r. Miron!s briefing notes which he made available on April 3, 1974, and his conclusion is being set forth as follows: c. Self Destruction: The critical problem in dealing with the SLA is their determination to commit suicide by establishing the conditions in which their destruction at the hands of some-one else is inevitable. The communica~ tions increasingly establish those conditions. Even Patricia has been drawn into the mutual suicide pact. Cinaue is acting out the dominant male role posing for the women of the group. He maintains his dominance so long as he is seen as the source of expertise in crime, action and courage. But his self guilt and posturing will not permit him to kill in cold blood. The group as a whole is not capable of their own suicides unless engineered as the dramatic culmination of their indecisive lifes as a consequence of the actions of others which they can rationalize | as outside of their responsibilities. But they remain in touch with reality and emphasize that contact in all of their communications. They do not know-the solution that will rescue them from themselves, but they will welcome such a solution when they have played out their game or when they are finally made aware of their unavoidable personal | responsibility for their acts. This morning &. Tirap telephoned Gallagher from Byracuse Waw work. He stated that he noted in the papers that there has been some criticism concerning the shoot-out in Los Angeles. He said the people who feel that excessive force was used were badly misinformed. The SLA was prepared for a big battle and were not going to give up easily. Re ae said that he clears up the record whenever the opportunity presents itself by saying that the police were caught in a situation where nothing else could have been done. He said that these people who are criticizing the police for the way this situation was handled ate in effect carrying out the works of the SLA and that the SLA evan in death were advancing their mission; that if people could -oniy understand what the background was they would not use this tragic aftermath to advance the cause of the SLA. , : é -2-
