Attached Las Vegas teletype advises on 3/17/75, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Gear inert detective stato source of unknown reliability Ih the Clark County Jail told him that a "Federal prisoner” in the jail by the name o hany“PMipps? had made some statements concerning the SLA and something to the effect that he knew the location of Patty Hearst.” Phipps -was interviewed by Bureau Agents and categorically denied membership ih the SLA or knowing present whereabouts of Patty Hearst. Phipps alleged connection with SLA was subject of newspaper article in local papers and was picked up by national news services, Our Portland Office (PDO) advised that on 3/18/75, that Gerald C. Lubenow, Bureau Chief, Newsweek, San Francisco, visited ; PDO and inquired of SAC information regarding wiretap being installed on Bill Walton's telephone as well as several other questions concerning Hearnap investigation. SAC advised Lubenow he was in no position to comment since to do so would jeopardize the continuing investigation. PDO also advises media known to be pursuing intensive investigation regarding white van report including close inspection of police vehicle recovery records. A local television reporter detected in PDO's garage space copy- ing license plate numbers and when challenged, reported admitted ; association with local station.
