The company sprang up when Stevens’ mother col- jected works by a number of noted psychoiugisis concern- ing, as the hltle states, “The Problem of Being Human.” Added to the psychologists’ papers are Barry Stevens’ own comments and ideas. When she approached a num- ber of publishing houses about publishing the book she was turnet down hecause the trade journal publishers said it was textbook material and the fextbook publishers in- sisted that the material be- longed in a trade bonk. Fin- ally her son had a number of copies of the book printed and began selling then out of his gsrage. Enters Business At the time he entered, i: beit unknowingly, into the . publishing business, John Ste- vens was teaching psychology at the junio® college level in California. Also on the market in 1969 was “In and Out of the Garbage Pail,” a novel autebicgraphy by Fred- erick Perls of memories and reflections on his life. ’ Yet Another Book In 1969, Real Peopte Press published ‘‘Don't Push the River,” a first person ac- count of Barry Stevens’ use of Gestalt Therapy at ihe Gestalt Institute in Canada. “Notes to Myself” by Hugh Prather was published it 1970. .This beok is a number of short patagraphs abott. living: feelings and exper- jences, behavior and rela- tionships.
