CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS © MAY 16 - 19, 1974. SHOOTING INCIDENT AT MEL'S SPORTING GOODS STORE THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1974 . Shortly after 4:00 p.m., a white male and female were stopped by an employee of Mel's Sporting Goods Store, 11425 Crenshaw Boulevard, Inglewood, California, on suspicion of shoplifting. A scuffle ensued, and while the employee attempted to handcuff the male, who was disarmed of a .38 caliber Colt revolver, shots were fired from a Volkswagen van parked across the street. The employee and others took shelter as the couple fled the scene in the van. A few minutes later, the occupants abandoned the van and commandeered a black and yellow Pontiac. Around 4:35 p.m., the Pontiac was abandoned and a 1963 Chevrolet Nova station wagon was commandeered. Eye witnesses subsequently identified the couple as William Taylor Harris and Emily Montague Harris, known members of the SLA. Additional investigation indicates the Harrises abandoned the Chevrolet station wagon and obtained other vehicles during their light. Based on evidence obtained and information from witnesses, AUSA, Los Angeles, subsequently authorized Federal process against William Taylor Harris and Emily Montague Harris for violation of National Firearms Act and State Firearms Control Assis~ tance Act. Bond was recommended at $50,000 each for William and Emil: Harris. Efforts to locate and apprehend the Harrises are continuing. INVESTIGATION LEADING TO SHOOTOOT . AT 1466 EAST 54TH STREET, LOS ANGELES THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1974 . The Volkswagen van utilized by the Harrises in fleeing from Mel's Sporting Goods Store had been previously ticketed for a parking violation by the Los Angeles Police Department. This ticket was issued while the van was parked in the area of 835 West 84th Street, Los Angeles.
