J SAC Henry A. Schutz, Jr., at 12:12 a.m., 5/17/74, telephonically
advised as follows:
On 5/16/74, at 4:40 p.m., Pacific Standard Time (PST), a male
and female entered a hardware store in Inglewood, California, (Los Angeles
County), purchased $31 worth of merchandise and in departing, the male
shoplifted a pair of socks. The proprietor observed this, followed and.
accosted them, and with the help of store clerks, attempted to subdue the
two individuals. At that point, an unknown individual opened fire with
an automatic weapon from outside a Volkswagen (VW) van parked across the
street. Male and female ran to the VW, took off, were pursued and subse-
quently abandoned VW, commandeered a Pontiac and later a Chevrolet station-
wagon. All Points Bulletins are out around Los Angeles; Agents on scene.
vw has been examined and it contained large quantity of groceries and
some new clothing, specifically Levis. V
b
A Detective Colt Special revolver was located at scene and
San Francisco Office (SFO) determined it was purchased by SLA subject
Emily Harris on 10/13/73. Los Angeles Office (LAO) identified William
Harris, Emily's husband, as having made a purchase the previous day in the
same store.
SFO is currently checking on VW; the VW was apparently sold to
a black male and female around the 6th or 7th of May using the name Ricky
Delgardo with a fictitious address.
SAC Schutz advised that they have chartered an aircraft and are
flying dogs, handler, and a SFO Agent to Los Angeles as “Operation Sniff;"
two other SFO Agents familiar with all aspects of ‘'REARNAP ‘case are also
en route to Los Angeles to arrive at 10:00 p.m., PST, 5/16/74. SAC Schutz
also advised that the news media is beginning to make some inquiries of
our LAC. _. Y ~ berrie
