Atlanta (UPI) - - fe a uo
a FBI Director Clarence M. Kdley told newspaper editors"
po Thursday he believes his Agents will locate Patricia Hearst "In ave
minimum of time," but as for now, ‘We don't know where she is: w ee » aa
Kelley said the FBI had made an extensive search for Miss ©
Hearst, who was kidnaped in Berkeley, California, February 4th,
and that his men had "Just about turned that area upside down." |
*"T'm going to make an admission that hurts. We don't
know where she is,"
Kelley, at a meeting of the Anerican Society of Newspaper
Editors, answered questions during a session with Atlanta Constitution
Editor, Reg Murphy, a recent kidnap victim, and Thomas Eastham, an
editor of the San Francisco Examiner. Miss Hearst's father, Randolph
A. Hearst, is editor and president of the Examiner.
Miss Hearst was identified as a participant in a San Francisco
bank holdup on Monday, and Kelley said, ‘We feel we have a better
opportunity (of locating her) since they have come out in the open."
Kelley avoided direct comment of Attorney General William
Saxbee's description of the newspaper heiress as a “common criminal."
He said, "We choose to take the lesser of the evaluation that
she is a material witness and could have been coerced. We will be
guided by the facts and not by any opinion."
Kelley said the possibility the case might be a hoax was "part
of our investigation" and if it is determined Miss Hearst took part in
the bank robbery, "the U. 8. Attorney has said she will be charged. ;
At this point, we just don't know." 7 ops
