Reporter, Associated Press, Albany, New York, telephonically
advised he had received word that our Buffalo Office was conducting
investigation concerning Donald David DeFreeze in the Buffalo area.
(DeFreeze is a Fugitive for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Confinement -
Escape, the 4/15/74 San Francisco bank robbery, wherein Patricia
Hearst is one subject, as_we s being a principal suspect in the
HEARNAP investigation). said he had heard sometime ago
that DeFreeze formerly resided in the Buffalo area and wondered if
there was any new development in our investigation. He said he
had called our Buffalo Office earlier asking them to confirm that
they were conducting current investigation to locate DeFreeze
and was advised that he would have to recontact the
Buffalo Office later this a.m. for comment from one of the
local FBI officials. ee he telephoned FBIHQ to con- .
firm if we were, in fac con ucting investigation in the Buffalo
area concerning DeFreeze.
a «:: tactfully advised that it was not known
at the moment 1£ our Buffalo Office was conducting investigation
-.concerning DeFreeze but that he should not necessarily attach any
particular significance to such information since it is common for
the FBI to conduct general investigation in many locations of the
United States at a given time for anyone in a fugitive status in
order to pursue general leads or generate other leads.
GEE .:.: 52: he would recontact the External Affairs
Division, FBIHQ, at the start of business early 4/17/74, should any
additional information be desired concerning DeFreeze. He was
appreciative of the conversation held and seemed more than satis-
fied with the above explanation.
