Brown of California was quoted as.stating that the California crime statistics are far more accurate than those of’ the FBI. Apparently, he based his observations on the fact that the Bureau of Crininal Statistics tn Caltfornta, unger the jurisdiction of the Attorney General's Office, has full<time representatives whose primary duty ts to call upon local agenctes that promoté accuracy in the reports prepared. The Attorney Genergl was quoted as additionally stating "Tl doubt that the FBI, with its many othér responsibilities, can gtve equal attention to promot}ng unt fofmitye” The 3ureau, of cours: realizes that 83rown's unwarranted attagk must be primarily based on the fact tha ¢ he was being severely criticized by California news- papers relative to the crime reporting program tn the State of Caltfornia. The Jureau, howeve fyels that Brown's statements shou. not go unchallenged. You should 1 upon Attorney General 3rown, explain to him that his statemen have come to the 3ureau's attention and that he ts being giken an opportunity to present a bil. of particulars.
