Ronald Reagan in the Novem- ber campaign against Assem- blyman Jess Unruh is more significant than it sounds. ~ Sinatra, a lifelong Democrat —whose mother was a party functionary in New Jersey— switched to Republican Re- agan last week. , His announcement was greeted by a “so what?” re- sponse from Democratic big- wigs, intimating that Sinatra's move was of little or no con- uence, ron & % The singer's support of Re- agan, whatever his reasons— and there are several themes from which to choose—could hurt Unruh’s campaign in its most vital spot, the pocket- book. Hollywood power has be- come an ever-growing ele- ment in national politics, and especially in California cam- paigns. While Sinatra's announce- ment and subsequent cam- paigning may not encourage any citizen to switch his vote, his participation in rallies, dinners, television shows and personal appearances wil} bring out crowds. Lo The crowds, in turn, will be donating money or ‘buying dinners. to support, Sinatra's choice of candidate.: Moreover Frank Sinatra has as many friends as anyone in Hollywood. Should he call on them, he could fill any stage with mere celebrities than an AnndAa uacd mi Atagemy Award night. There is no means of deter- mining how much the singer raised on behalf of the late John F. Kennedy’s campaign. But it was substantial enough that he escorted the new Pres- ident’s wife, Jackie, to the In- 1 augural Ball in 1961. Assemblyman Unruh has said that he does not have.the financial resources of Reagan. His party will trail the GOP in money for campaign newspa- per advertising, bdillbeards, television, radio and = fund raising events at which small and large contributions: are made. In addition to asking friends to help him campaign, Sina- tra’s involvement very possi- bly will still some Hollywood voices that might ‘otherwise have spoken out for Unruh. No matter how. curious. or difficult it may be for the lay- man to comprehend, Frank Sinatra is a powerful man in Hollywood. He has bailed friends out of financial troubtie, renewed careers, hired down-and-out- ers, given generously to the charities of acquainiances.
