attempted to connect with the strike incident. As a result of his attack, a
local Catholic priest left the stage and protested to Sinatra's manager, one
George Evans. Evans replied that Sinatra's information came, in part at
least, from the confidential files of the FBI. (62-83219-17)
.3)OFFER OF SERVICE TO THE BUREAU, SEPTEMBER 7, 1950:
On September 7, 1950, SEP: 02:21: the
Director's office and was referred to Mr. J. P. Mohr to whom he dan
offer by Frank Sinatra to be of service to the FBI. According ii
Sinatra felt that as a result of the publicity which he had received connecting
him with subversive elements, he might be able to be of service in some capacity
and had first considered contacting CIA. According t at the
advice of a CIA representative, he was told to contact the FBI. He also stated
that Sinatra denied any subversive affiliations. The Director noted his agree-
ment with Mr. Tolson's comment that we "want nothing to do with him."

D. ALLEGED SUBVERSIVE AFFILIATIONS:
On December 14, 1954, the State Department requested a name
check on Sinatra, and a summary memorandum dated December 30, 1954, was
prepared setting forth his alleged contacts with the Communist Party and numerous
cited communist front groups. It was reported that_a confi ial and reliable
informant in December, 1945, advised th

radio and movie star, was then a member of the Communist Party. The informant
Stated he was told that Sinatra formerly held membership in the American Youth
for Democracy Organization in New Jersey but had recently been admitted to the
New York branch of the Communist Party. se.
. In view of a sworn affidavit,executed by Sinatra on January 10,
1955, in connection with his application for a passport,that he had never been
a member of the Communist Party or of any organization of a subversive character
the State Department requested an investigation by the Bureau to determine whether
prosecution was warranted against Sinatra for n:aking a false statement in the
application. By memorandum of March 7, 1959, the Department instructed the
