Autwast 30, 1951 Fsdeval Sureau of Investi:ation THES TGS “MAY JOR [TB TAGHED m Washi on .m om. Cs : Dear Mr. Soovers PPE EBL I don't pretend to understand the workings of the Federal Bureau of Investiga- tion. I've always felt that since we hed your agency everything, more or less, was under control. However, I'm now puzzled by something and also have a very thorough feeling of revulsion about another aspect of it, Not so very long azo Walter Winchell in his broadcast save a tip-off about a trip being made to Eavana by the notorious Fischetti brothers, a trip te take drug money to Luctang, and he went so far as tomention the name of third person waco would be taking the money - Frank Sinatra, I have just read an article by Lee Mortter in the August issue of the "American Mercury," which is a partial expose of canzsterism in the entertainment world and he has mentioned the above stated facta. What is more, his material for the article was taken from the files of cur Treasury De- partment and there is a photograph showing Sinatra getting off the pane, carry- ing the suitcase purportedly containing thet money, and in company of the two Pischettis, and, further, that the T-men were on the scene at the airport, Did not the fact that he was in their company and carrying e@ suitcase, a large ona, (the Sinatra of al} people carrying a suitesase of any sizel) at least male him r™ aie J an oes fikmeeark ws gai suspect enough for att tention on the jart of your agents? No doubt, there was good reason for nig not beefing apprehended. As I seid, I doen't understand the methods empbyed by your agency. Something just recently has happened, too, that makes me wonder. Maybe I'm just becoming suspicious of everything. On his "flight" back from Mexico, forced out by the attentions of the press (one of whc he deliberately drove his car at and jammed on the braxes as he touched the photozrapher's lez with it and then threatened to kill him the next time) he anu. Gardner, according to the press, returned to the Los Angeles airport in a B+36 bomber borrowed from one of his friends in Mexico, a Mexican importer and export. er. J know that surplus equipment can be purchased for private and other usage, but why does an importer want a B-36 bomber? Hets a Mexican, but in what busi- ness? Sinatra is the close fr'end of Moretti, adonis, Cazone, Costellé, and SUCTANO, and now comes to light that he nas as a friend a Mexican importer, Whe goes on? Is the bomber being used for narcotics across the border? Sinatra would certainiy know who's-who to whan to deliver. there wasno mentionof a pil either. The papers said he returned in a vomber he borrowed from the Mexican, Ye knoys how to fly, had a private plane, but why would he want to know how to fly a bonber, if he actually did? It's no meantask and if he does «now he must have had anything but a sound and heaithy reason for wanting to Know 10w. Sinatra to my mind constitutes just asruch of a criminat gs His odious friends not only by association with them and dope addicts but, what is much worse, by his participation in their activities. Of cairsé, he owes his career to them in no uncertain way and also owes his sup ,ort financially {outside of his career) at times to them. He can't possibly come out anid say he's innocent of all this, The poess gave an account about a year~-nad-a-half ago of his visit to Italy when he attended Luclano's parties and read avout the delishtful inseription (the Wilercury article will tell you) he head put in the gold cigarette case he gave Luciano, This Sinatra is quite some thing, ‘isn't he?i Yet hets Walkin? around free and is permitted to remain on top, wnerets he det initely anything but an © exanple to youth. Why isn't sorething dene about this undeserving and worthless individual? Prom wnere I s&t, he should be in jail or at 1 ast out of the publi life he enjoys so freely. The photocrapher hes flied a conplaint asainst tim, but will anythinz cane of it? Not with Sinatra's "friends" behind tim] «here Were tne police at tne a: irport that tney did not see sc tirerstely drive his car at e person ana isn't tnere @ cruse vor rarrest when tecrets en attempt at manslaushter?
