Bernie D. Shellum, 5109 Upton Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota, home telephone number 926-1360, stated that he is a reporter for the "Minneapolis Tribune," a local Minneapolis, Minnesota, newspaper, and also does part-time work for "Time" Magazine, as well as "The New York Times. At approximately 1:15 p.m., on Saturday, July 26, 1969, Mr. Shellum was at his residence when.a telephone call was received at that location, His wife answered the phone and was asked by the caller if he could speak to Bernie Shellum, Before she could make any reply, a voice cut in, stating, "This is Bernie Shellum,."' Mrs. Shellum was quite surprised, as she knew her husband was sitting in the same room with her and was not talking on the telephone, Shortly after the unknown individual started the conversation with the caller, Mrs, Shellum handed the phone to her husband. When Mr. Shellum recived the phone from his wife, he heard an individual whose voice he did not recognize giving two telephone numbers to another male voice involved in the conversation, He indicated the first number "is here," and mentioned Area Code 612, and said the second number was — in Chicago, Area Code 312. There followed a general discussion as to whether or not there were other people close to Senator McCarthy, who could verify or discredit Drew Pearson's column, which had appeared in the “Washington Post" that morning, alleging that Senator McCarthy was going to be divorced by his wife. The person calling, who was later determined to be Terry Myers of "Time" Magazine in Chicago, Illinois, kept pressing the person who had stated he was Bernie Shellum for additional people, but was told by this individual that he could not help him any further than giving him the two telephone numbers, which had already been furnished, These numbers — were not noted by Shellum during the period he was listening to this ¢all.
