Dick Nelson, Walter Jenkins' assistant at the White House, called me’
Sunday morning, 5-31-64, and asked if I would meet him at the White House at
12:00 o'clock noon that day. Upon seeing Nelson he explained that Jenkins was at
- Camp David, however, he had talked with the President and\had asked Nelson to get in
- touch with me so thata matter could be handled on Sunday, ~31-64, Nelson stated that
- |} voth Diggs and Davidson had approached Senator Eugene: McCarthy (D-Minn. ) and had
- ‘advised him that they knew a "Mr. X" who was in a position to immediately overthrow
iCastro. They stated that "Mr. X" would only talk to the President of the United States.
_} They also told Senator McCarthy that Davidson was leaving for Europe on Monday,
- 1g-1-64, and that the matter would necessarily have to be handled on Sunday, 5-31-64.

In view of the time element, and because of Jenkins’ request, I called
Diggs telephonically at 12:15 p.m., 5-31-64, and identified myself as a representative.
