BACKGROUND OF ERICH FROMM Ney, Che :
Erich Fromm is a psychoanalyst m the faculties of the National
University of Mexico and Michigan State University. He is an author and
lecturer. (Who's Who in America, 1960-61)
There is no indication in the files of this Bureau that Fromm is a
communist or has any connections with the Communist Party, USA. Fromm is
a socialist. He was a member of the Independent Socialist League (ISL) and on
June 2, 1960, was elected to the National Committee of the Socialist Party-
Social Democratic Federation (SP-SDF). (100-429425-63, 64)
The Summer, 1960, issue of The Socialist Call, the official organ of
the SP-SDF, identified Erich Fromm as one of the members of the editorial _

On 7/18/58 the ISL, a basic revolutionary group, was removed from
the list of organizations designated pursuant to Executive Order 10450, and in
September, 1958, the ISL was dissolved. SL members were invited to join
the SP-SDF on an individual basis and many did. The SP-SDF is not the subjec
of a Bureau investigation. At the SP-SDF National Convention held 6/28-30/60,
Max Schachtman, former National Chairman of the I8L, and at least four other
former SL a were elected to the new SP-SDF National Committee. so ar
