Enussion controls required by the Federal Government have usually been
included wn the base cost of Corvettes. Reguonal requirements, such as for
Catifornia and hgh altitude areas. are usually not ucluded in base Costs since
these typecally exceed Federal standards. For example, 1966 Corvettes sold in
Cakforma were equipped with Air injector Reactors (RPO K19) wiuch cost
customers an extra $47.55 retail. Cakforma requirements for 1973 Cor-
wettes included a $15.00 assembly line emissions test (RPO YA7). and cerufi-

Colors
Some controversy will always exist regarding factory available colors for
Corvettes. Thus is especially true for the 1962 and older Corvette modeis.
Pror to the 1963 model Corvette. no paint identification coding was
affixed to the Corvette body. Thus, if an earher Corvette is re-painted care-
fully enough. the color can be changed without detection. Easier said than
Gone. and most repasmt can be recognized if inspected closely enough. But the
lack of postive ID plate venfication keeps the paint controversy brewing.
The “code” usted in the tables is the exterior color code stamped on a plate

Chevrolet has always used lacquer for the extenor bouy surfaces of Cor-
vettes. 1957 ana older Corvettes were painted with futrocellulose lacquer,
except for laca Silver models which were acrylic lacquer. All 1958 and newer
Corvette modelg were factory punted with acrybc lacquer. For refinushung,
the actyht Celuts are generally available from most mayor supphers. The

ftroceluioss colors can be a problem, since many paint formulas for the
older colors have been pulled from local suppliers by paint manufacturers.

Color availebuity often changes. Some colors ksted by Chevrolet for Cor
vettes were never used, while others nat Lsted have. For instance, the Saffron
exterior color usted for the 1978 Corvette was withdrawn before production
and replaced with Mahogany. Another probiem is that many pubkshed kst.ngs
of Corvette colors are incomplete. A flagrant example is the often printed hist
Of three 1963 exterior colors, red. blue, and silver. Actually, there were seven
exteror colors avauabie. Even Gill's dealer parts books are incorrect.
Summary and Caution
Thus publication, especially the secuan to follow, is intended to promote the
fun and enjoyment of the Corvette hobby by presenung usefu: wnformauon ia
a readily accessible format. A great deal of effort has been expanded in
Compiling the data and venfying it, including Checlung by many ef the coun
Uy’s foremost Corvette enthusiasts prior to publication.
But almost nothing is absolute in the world of automobiles, especially
Corvettes. A very high percentage of the following data is accurate for a high
percentage of Corvettes. but excapuons are possible in simast every Cate
gory.
Because of the very rature of auto production, a totally accurate listis.9 of
aulomotve facts, parucularly related to part numbers, ts impossuble. General
MOLOFs does not document every production change made. The repiecement
, parts aspect of General Motors 1s keyed to function, not crgmadty. Parts are
interchanged during production when shortages occur. New parts mvertones
are NOt always phased in so that ati “old” parts are used before new.
The informauon wn the tables to follow has been oblaned from hundreds
_ Of sources. The sources range from pubkshed General Motors documents to
Surveys taken by organizations lke The Nat:onal Corvette Restorer’s Socety.
Some of the data has never before been published. informauon derwed from
surveys and observation tends to be accurate but aot necessafily totally
inclusive since st is based On a samphng of vetucies.
In short, you should’ never rely On published data as the final guideline ia
Getermuning a Corvette’s value. it can ‘be helpful to you, but w the end you
Must balance & with good judgement, logic. and Common sense.
