[opportunity for employment ac- The First Lady pointed out four fundamental rights which, she wrote, belonged to all U. S. citi- zens, irrespective of calor. Mrs. Roosevelt aired her racial attitude in a reply to # letter from! Mrs. Catherine Stallworth of Evergreen, who had suggested toi Mrs. Roosevelt that her jdeas about treatment of the Negroes arose “from a lack of complete knowledge of the Negro situation in the South, particularly in the amall towns where there are al- most a3 many Negroes as whites.” Wrole Mrs. Roosevelt: “Much, that Js sald about my attitude on the Negro*quesiion is distorted, a exaggelated by people who ale opposed to my husband and , and by those wiio have deep-| réoted prejudices... . I have never ie vocated social equality. cording to ability and at equal pay; an equal opportunity for edu- ‘cation; for justice before the law, and to participate in Government through the ballot. “This frace? question is not just a southern question. Tt ils a world question * * * If we are not fair and just to the colored people, how can we expect other countries to trust us and believe in our good faith? “I know tn many places the Negroes outnumber the white people and that is one explanation for not giving them the right to vote.
