FREEDOM dated December 17, 1945. Information is set forth t OSEVELT met SOLEDAD-i-KIVAREZ, ; whose husband, SANTIA VAREZ, is being held prisoner by FRANCG, on De- cember 17, 1945. It was stated that Mrs. ALVAREZ arrived from Cuba to intensify the fight for her husband's freedom and Mra. ROOSEVELT expressed interest in the case, s tating that any trial of ALVAREZ and the other political prisoners should be an open one, adding that the Internmetional Fanel of Lawyers should be permitted to enter Spain in this connection ami that only an aroused public opinion could force FRANCO to permit this Panel to defend ALVAREZ and the others, that justice demanded that political pris- oners should have open trials everywhere in the world. Dear Sirt It was atated that the trial of ALVAREZ and ZAPERAIN was acheduled for the early part of January and that the AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR SPANISH FREEDOM, which arranged the meeting between Mrs. ROOSEVELT and Mrs. ALVAREZ, had anized an International Panel cons ng, up to that time, of BARTLEY RUw from America and probably D. N TT from England. The Panel was designed to defend ALVAREZ and ZAPERAIN if FRANCO went through with his plan to t ry then. The foregoing is submitted to the Bureau for its information.
