ThdChristian Defender first appeared on 8, 1939. It carried the news of a joint meetng of the and th® Christian Mobilizers; a story lifted from! I also reprinted a from the’National American, adopted the Bund slogan ree America” and used as fillers the phrase, “A Common ront Against a Common Enemy.” The second issue was more “patriotic” and carried the line, “Free America Stinkweeds.” ‘ be Christian Defender was deliberately, designed to be f the coarsest sheets published in New York. The cruder it got, the more it lied, the more it slandered the Jew and assailed Democracy, the more popular it became. I mimeo- phed 200 copies of each issue and sold 150 copies at two cents each at “patriotic” meetings and through the"Germania Bookstore, using the balance for my correspondetice with American fascists. The income covered all expenses. I had e i. 34 SEEEELD ? =] 3 no qualms about publishing the hate sheet because it circulated - only among those who already were confirmed fanatics. The first three copies of every issue went to the pro-democratic groups with which I was associated. Subsequently, I filed a complete set with the Department of Justice. The Christian Defender gained for me the respect of count- less American Nazis, including Father Coughlin, who thanked ¥ : me by letter and through Carl¥Pinkston asked that two copies be sent him every week. Even Seward Collins, the thy intellectual fascist, called it “bright” and asked me to leave three copies at his office. The Christian Defender also became my passport to Nazis abroad. I began to hear regularly from thet Deutscher Fichte- Bund, named after the German philosopher who taught that Germany was predestined for world domination. Its di r, Theodor Kessemcier at Hamburg, addressed me as “Dear Friend” and placed me on his mailing list. He sent me copies of Hitler's speeches, reams of lies about the Jews and told me ee Lent ant Pavubetions sisinigred fy the Benretars of Flute grewaiag the vurietrusien of juente of foreign pristigalo and Tee nptificstion of atts oC foreign geverenente, Imm, TOP Houp teParuntien, 8 coe of tee pole ~*~ £ refer ty the Departemt's Lotter of Unteter 6, m@inammig, sowteiving | JEW YORK WL NEAR OFATHERAGE, MWILUAID ELLE ibtiter & Publisher peptens CRT: OF OE ROMS OF van WEF UL od Pree UD Pacha ‘SRSeT Es Mates ws pres at Tee, Once & EE, @n.
