Dear Friend,
Tro’ hundred thousand striking General’ Motors' workers, thléir wives and
children are faced with the prospect of dire ngesd. After nines veeks,
nany have now exhausted their savings and cashed their remaining war
bounds. Even if the strike should be settled shortly, there will be a
pericd of weeks before all the workers-van be put back to work and be-
fore they will receive a pay. In the meantime, they are ineligible for
unemployment compensation. Nor has thg/UJAW-CIO treasury sufficient funds
to pay strike benefits to the thousands of individuals and families

GM strikers. The National Committee is being joined by over 100 pro-
zinent Michigan Citizens who have constituted a State Committee on this
appeal. The sponsors of this fund-raising campaign believe that the
Aeapon of hunger is one that no American group wants used against an-
otner. It should have no bearing on the outcome of the strike at GM.
Hunger and need are not the foundations on which to achieve reconversio.

In the nawe of these distinguished citizens, I urgently appeal to you
for an immediate and generous contribution to aid the families of GM
strikers. The Committee will take extreme care to have the handling of
all funds properly audited. Distribution to those demonstrating actual
need will be made according to policies established by a subcommittee
consisting of social workers experienced in relief work.
Contributions should be made payable te the Citizens’ Committee to Aid
Families of GM Strikers, and should be forwarded to Mr. I,-Pokempner,
