The principal speaker would be HELEY GARAGAINQQUGLAS, Congresswoman from California, and SH.PLTY was requested tc make a thirty-minute speech, He was forced ta decline because of prior commitments, and was hesitant to accept the honorary chairmanship of the Massachusetts Chapter. They discussed the growth of the PCA in Massa- chusetts and the activities of the Union for Democratic Action, also known as Americans for Democratic action, SHAPLEY asserted that two of the ROOSEVELTS and LEON HENDERSON were very active in the ADA and des~-. cribed themselves as “genuine liberals." SHAPLEY averred that they were “nearly genuine and nearly liberal," but that so long as they continued to look for Commnists under their beds, they would accomplish nothing. He war fearful lest this organization sap the strength of the PCA and render both meaningless, LANSING pointec out that Mrs, ELEANOR-ROSSEVELT worked closely with the’ PC, and thus counterbalansed the two ROOSEVELTS in the ADA. SHAPLEY finally agreed to accept the Honorary Chairmanship, . and fur ther ts undertake the organization of sclentific and profeasiona ‘) people in Massachusetts into the PCA. ‘ U 6 at te ey tn ee ee eae ire ed eel” 5 len lie Oa | ta -— —
