ec oo was L,
Washington, was very heatedly criticized because he
was supposed to have instituted a checking system
on all of his - right from his under-secretary ts
assistant secretaries on down to the etencgraphers.
I do remember that. I remember great indignatio:
because he would drop in at odd hours in the cafeterias
and discover who left their offices and went for a
‘eup of coffee. (Laugh). There was a great deal of
criticism. (Laugh).
I think one of the funniest stories on that, as I
Weamisee Wise we =e oe
remember it, one day he came storning inte the
' eafeteria in the Interior Building end saw the place
_. Just filled with people having ae snack and for a cup
-.. OL coffee, and he ordered the cafeteria closed, and
; ordered everybody to be fired who was in there
“and then he ‘discovered these were the people who
had just come off their shift and were getting ready
to go home. (Laughing). ~~
I do also think there shculd be e meat deal more
done at the local government leve} to execee in the
_.» warious states and at least enable it to be published
‘.. when a man 4s cooperating with these racketeers.
' -Por instance, I read not long ago a report of
'-" testimony before a Senate Crime Inveeticating Committes
when they took a report by a sheriff fro Louisiana.
and he testified openly he had alicwed the
Costello group to come in ard open a notericus
gambling place in nis conmonity ond that he ww
nothing wrong in it, that if people wanted to gamble,
they were going to gamble - pericd. And then it
came out that he hai made hunire‘ts of thousands of
dollars in gambling bets, and he made a freat point
of stating that he had paid bis federal income tax
on those earnings. Now, J think at lees’ the ;
people in that parish 4n Louteiow, wateh corresycons
to a county in other stat..9, pho have
