(100-338892-41) _ On May S, 1947, the "Brooklyn Eagle," a daily news- paper published itn Brooklyn, New York, reflected that a bazaar sponsored ly the Hettonal Counctl of Amertean-Soviet Friendship had opened with a vartety concert on May 4, 1947, at City Center Casino Ballroom, New York, New York. The article reflected that Duke Ellington was one of the persons starring in the concert. The Nattonal Council of American-Soviet Friendship has been designated by .the-Attorney. General pursuant to Lzecutive Orier 10450. (100-146964-1301 page 17) Gn September 30, 1559, "The Hew Leeder, * a weekly magazine, contained an article captioned "Wo Red Songs For Hae" by Duke Ellington. A foreword by the editors indicated that the "Daily #orker,” on May 27, 1950, had first reported that Ellington had signed the.Stockholm Peace Petitton and that on August 20 and 27, 1950, additional stories had been published repeating the sane false cleim. It was also stated thot - fllington, upon Ate return from a furopean tour, had repudiated. the allegations. Ina the article, tllington dented signing the . petttion and told of his efforts to get his name removed. The Stockholx Peace Petition was "Cited as Communtst” by the Gongresstonal Comaittee on lin-Amertean ¢ctivities tna statement tssued July 13, 1950.
