Volunteer," a publteation of the Henry Eaton Pest of the
Abrahan Lincoln Brigade, Los Angeles, Caltfornta, reflected
that on July 26, 1941, the Hollywood Chapter of the Yeterans
of the Abrahan Lincoln Brigade had gtven a barn dance to retse
funds. The article reflected that Duke Ellington had appeared

On Novenber 10, 1941, a dinner waa otven at Ciro'’s
Restaurant, Hollywood, California, under the cusptces of the
dnertcan Comnittee to Save Refugees, the Exrtled Fritera
Comnittee, and the United American Spanish Aid Committee.
The program for the dinner Iitsted one Duke Ellington as being
on the Comnittee of Sponsors for the dtnner. The Amertcan
Comatttee to Save Refucees was cited as a communtat front by
the Spectal Comatttee on Un-American Activities tn a report
dated March 29, 1944. The Californta Committee on Un-American
Acttuittes tn 1948 described the Srtled Writers Connittee aa
an organtzation established by the comnunteat League of Anertean
Writers to bolster the comauntst front, the Amertean Conntttee
_ to Save Refugees. The Extled Friters Coamittee was further
reported as having worked with other communtst fronts and tn
19¢2 merged tnto the Jotnt Antt-Fasctst Refugee Commtttee. The
