This group has no political or religious affiliations, Although not desiring to create an organization, this group feels the need of informal association. Persons interested in associating with us may get in touch with one of the undersigned.® ; There were sixteen names signed to this letter among whom was appointee. that ABBEY was unknown to him personally. He stated, however, that he was acquainted with the fact that he was a student at the University of New - Mexico for two or three years prior to the past academic year. He stated a the records of his office reflect that appointee resided in the dormitories PERT as located on Kirtland Air Force Base. He stated there was no information ‘ae in the files of his office which reflects adversely on his loyalty to the . a United States. CE: :--: that he was acquainted with the fact that appointee was the editor of a literary publication on the campus named ‘The Thunderbird." He informed that in the spring of 1951 this publication came out with an obnoxious quotation on the front of it which had implica~ tions against religion and government. He advised that he recalled the incident and knew that there was an investigation made of it by the head of the Student Affairs Committee on the campus. He stated that it was his 2 impression that the outcome of this investigation seemed to indicate that : appointee was a highly intellectual individual who was rather shy an desired to get his name before the students and create a sensation. stated that as he recalled the outcome it appeared that i 5 the part of appointee which raised quite a commotion. sy stated that he did not believe there was any motive beh this thing and that he himself had not associated appointee with any of the Comunistic element on the campus at that time.
