"The New York Daily Worker in a telegram ta Attorney General MceGranery revealed that FBI Agents have been accosting and harassing members of tts staff and charged an invasion of freedom of the press. The paper cited two specific staff mem-~ bers, Negro Affairs Editor Abner #. Serry and Assistant Business Manager Emanuel Levin, as having been subjected to aitempts at intimidation. fhe tert of the wire, signed by Alan Maz, Wanagtng Editer fellows; ‘Attorney General WcGranery, Department of Justice, Washington, DBD. During past fey months a number of Daily horxker staff menbers, tacluding Abner } erry, our Negro Affairs Editor and Emanuel vin, our Assistant Business Manager, have been /V; 7 accosted and kdrassed by agents of the FRI. In Some cases our staff members have been repeatedly accosted by agents who made Shae te Ee ae wi OOo fell it clear that an attempt wes being made to recruit Stool pigeons and to frighten people into leaving the paper. [In several cases the activity of the FAI Agents wes of suck a character as to impress friends and netghbors of their victims that a job on our newspaper carried with tt the taint of criminality. We hold that this activity of the FBI is an invasion of the freedom of the press, freedom of speech and personal freedom. fhe activities of these secret agents, many of whom snooped among friends and netghbors of our staff members, have berne no fruit. Such activity demonstrated to us the dangerous and stealthy way in which the personal freedom of all citizens claimed by the Bill of Rights are being undermined.
