Northwest Airlines Flight 305
11/24/71
CAA -—- HIJACING; EXTORTION
At 1:25 p.m. on November 25, 1971, I called SA
at the Bureau. I advised him that thus far
we had been unable to get the services of the Army or the
Air Force to participate in the search and that we were
seeking permission of a general officer at Scot Air Force
Base to accomplish this, when we learned that an Agent
by the name of [| _—sidjat the Bureau was attempting to make
similar arrangements with the Pentagon. He advised that a
Brigadier General HIXON at the Pentagon had called the
Bureau and referred to a law enactéd7on June 18, 1878
precluding the use of the military forces for this purpose
without the permission of the White House. I told him
in view of this, we would forget it and try to make other
arrangements. I advised him that Northwest Airlines had
triangulated the location of the aircraft at 8:05 p.m. on
November 24, 1971, which was the latest time the subject
was known to be in the air plane and had established this
location in the vicinity of Merwin, Washington. In view
of this, were were having the helicopters of the Air
National Guard move to that area and we would try to get
additional equipment for the search.
In addition, we have sent Agents down to do a
ground search. He wanted us to get the prints of the
crew for elimination purposes and I told him this was being
done by Minneapolis. I then advised that we wanted to
make a press release, releasing the description of the
Unsub along with the artist's conception which the Bureau
was preparing and notify the press of the area of search,
urging all to be alert for a parachutist in that area.
He advised this was satisfactory. Permission we later
obtained from SA DON HANNENG of the Crime Records Section
to get this release. IY _ F/_, y
