J. Edgar Hoover, Dtreotor of the Federal Bureau of Investi- gation, eaid thet many of those arrested mere vigorous advocates of Azte tdeologtes and were extremely dangerous to the natton aa ak nw es ee Bucorgunrds, Qu nt ‘eo potential spies "Some who have been taken tnto custody frankly adnttted they would welcome an opportunity to fight against the Untted States,” Director Hoover satd, "It was necessary that the FBI know the tdentity of such persons zo that the proper steps could be taken to "prevent then from comnttting actse detrinental to the security of the United States," “Among those apprehended were 5,977 Gernans, 5,803 Japanese, "3,508 Italians, Jl Rumantans, 11 Hungarians and one Bulgarian.
